During the 2018-2019 academic year, the bCourses vendor (Canvas) plans to begin making new gradebook and quizzing tools available for testing. As of May 2018, Berkeley expects that the new gradebook tool will replace the existing gradebook in mid-2019, and that new quizzing tool will be available alongside the existing tool sometime in 2019, with the current tool being phased out during the 2019-2020 academic year.
The new gradebook is focused on performance improvements, particularly by improving load time in large courses. This has been a long-standing issue in large courses, and Berkeley has been continuously working with Canvas to describe our faculty's needs. In addition to improved load times, the new gradebook will offer faculty new options including late policy settings and new ways to view student information. More detail on the new gradebook is available at: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13333-canvas-release-new-gradebook
The new quiz tool, also known as Quizzes.Next, will offer instructors a number of new features including additional question types. Details about the new quiz tool can be found at https://community.canvaslms.com/groups/quizzes; although we are not participating in the current beta offering of this tool as of May 2018, we intend to make Quizzes.Next available to instructors once it is more widely available to Canvas users.
