Ally Tool Within bCourses

Overview/Introduction

Ally is a new tool within bCourses designed to assist instructors and students by supporting the creation and availability of screen reader and assistive-technology friendly course content. Ally integrates seamlessly with bCourses to offer instructors a course-wide picture of the accessibility of their online course content while also providing students with downloadable alternative formats.

Project Goals

The goals of this project are to deliver the following functionality within bCourses:

  • Provide students the ability to automatically generate “Alternative Formats” for course files, and makes them available for download to instructors and students. These formats include PDF, HTML, Electronic Braille, ePub, and MP3.

  • Provide instructors with visual indicators next to the uploaded course documents so instructors can see accessibility scores and learn how to create more accessible source files (note: students cannot access the visual indicators).

  • Assess the accessibility of uploaded content based on WCAG 2.0 AA standards

  • Create an institutional report allowing UC Berkeley leadership to assess the accessibility of uploaded course documents over time
